About Carol

Carol Ofafa has joined the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy as part of the team developing the African School of Regulation (ASR). African School of Regulation (ASR) was launched via a scientific knowledge partnership agreement among the European University Institute (EUI), the University of Cape Town (UCT), the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES), the Enel Foundation, RMI, and the Energy Nexus Network (TENN). Three new partners have joined the initiative at a later stage: The Rockefeller Foundation, The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) of the UN, and The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Carol works as a researcher in exploring viable partnerships in the Africa energy sector and identifying capacity building opportunities for experts working in increasing energy access in Africa.

For the past 9 years, Carol worked as an Electrical and Electronic Engineer at the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). She worked as a Supervisor at the Suswa Converter station which is part of the Ethiopia-Kenya interconnector transmission line project. She was responsible for graduate trainees under her supervision and operations at the HVDC converter station. She previously served in the Power Systems Planning and Design department as a protection engineer where she carried out design, design review, commissioning, testing and construction supervision for various transmission line and substation construction projects cumulatively worth over $1Billion.

On 18th December 2020 Carol was awarded the highest civilian award in Kenya, The Head of State Commendation (HSC) by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, for her role in the implementation and project management of the Suswa-Isinya 400kV transmission line, 132kV Kindaruma-Mwingi-Garissa line, her work in mentorship of women in energy, her contribution to the design of a thermal electric generator at the Engineers Without Borders UK Competition, 2018 that was intended for use by residents of Kibera to provide access to cheap and clean energy, and for her conceptual ideation of electric mobility charging infrastructure design at the Open Africa Power Fellowship, 2019. Carol is also the founder of E-Safiri, a Kenyan Start-up that aims to transform lives by developing solar powered charging stations for 2 & 3 wheeled vehicles.
E-Safiri's goal is to help increase adoption of e-mobility solutions for commercial use, in an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector.

In her early career years, Carol worked at KPMG Kenya in strategy support in the CEO’s office where she worked in Audit, providing financial services support to consumer industrial markets (CIM) clients.
